By meeting accessibility guidelines, you will not only be including a huge segment of the population into your target audience but will also be gaining added SEO benefits.<\/p>\n<p>We will explain just how easy it is to do this.<\/p>\n<p>Before we begin, here\u2019s a quick overview of what we will cover-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong> What web accessibility really is<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Why you should implement it-the obvious and not-so-obvious reasons<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>How to implement it-an introduction to ARIA, code snippets, checklists, etc.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Web accessibility evaluation tools<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is web accessibility:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An accessible website is designed and coded to be more usable for people who are both differently abled and those with a temporary disability.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why you should implement it:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.To increase reach and conversion:<\/p>\n<p>An accessible website will cover several demographics such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The differently abled-<br \/>\nTo put it into perspective- around 285 million people worldwide have some kind of visual impairment with around 360 million with some kind of hearing impairment.<\/li>\n<li>The temporarily disabled i.e. due to sickness or injury<\/li>\n<li>The aged<\/li>\n<li>Those in areas with poor network<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2. Improve your website\u2019s SEO<br \/>\nA website optimized for accessibility is also better optimized for search engines. Search engines and web accessibility devices like screen readers read the code of your website in a similar way. They rely on code alone to understand content.<br \/>\nWhile optimizing for SEO does not necessarily translate into a properly accessible site, the base is the same.All of the guidelines we have mentioned below, however, cover both the overlap in good SEO and accessibility design and much more.<\/p>\n<p>3. Fulfill a human right<br \/>\nWeb accessibility is a human right recognized by the United Nations.<br \/>\nThe tech world is getting more serious about designing apps and products for every kind of person to use. From Apple\u2019s announcement of a new website to promote accessibility to improvements in the latest version of Android N.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to implement it:-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Visual guidelines:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14479\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/eye-40889_960_720-400x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"152\" height=\"76\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This largely involves providing text equivalents for graphics so that devices like screen readers can help the visually impaired access content. Some of these guidelines are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Ensure content is based in HTML and not CSS<br \/>\nThis is because screen readers navigate by reading text within the page structure with tables, links, lists, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">2.Ensure HTML headings are clear and in logical order<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">This helps users jump from one topic to another easily and also gives them a clear outline of the structure and content of the page through their screen readers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">3.Use descriptive text for hypertext links. Do not let users guess what \u2018Click here\u2019 refers to or directs to.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">4.Follow these guidelines for images:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Add a long description for plain images and informative images with graphs.<\/li>\n<li>E.g.-<img alt=\"\" longdesc=\"url\u201dsampleurl.com\u201c\">. This will display it on another page.<\/li>\n<li>Provide \u2018null\u2019 values for graphics that have no other purpose than structure. E.g. \u2013divider bars.<\/li>\n<li>Create infographics in HTML or CSS rather than using an image file which will make it more accessible to both the visually impaired and search engines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">5.Do not rely only on colour alone to convey information and choice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">6.Conform to colour contrast standards.<br \/>\nColorsafe.co\u2019s contrast checker will help ensure you meet current web standards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">7.Ensure forms and buttons are labeled appropriately<\/p>\n<p>If this makes you think that aesthetics will need to be sacrificed for accessibility \u2013check out feedmusic.com.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Auditory guidelines:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14481\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/ear-159306_960_720-123x200.png\" alt=\"ear-159306_960_720\" width=\"79\" height=\"129\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide captions, subtitles and transcripts for video content<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Motor guidelines:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14483\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Hand_left.svg_-197x200.png\" alt=\"hand_left-svg\" width=\"140\" height=\"143\"><\/p>\n<p>These guidelines ensure that websites can be accessed without touching the screen by using a keyboard or other input device. This is done largely by use of the TAB key to navigate sections and let users know where they are on a page-<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Highlight location on a page for users who will navigate only with a keyboard :<br \/>\nThis simple example shared on the accessibility website for the University of Washington shows you how to change the visible style of a link when it has focus for both mouse and keyboard users.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">CSS code for a hyperlink<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\"><em>a {<\/em><br \/>\n<em> color: black;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> background-color: white;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> text-decoration: underline;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> }<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\"><em>Code to highlight the text when both a mouse and keyboard user hovers over the link:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\"><em>a:hover, a:focus{<\/em><br \/>\n<em> color: white;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> background-color: black;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> text-decoration: none;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> }<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\"><em>2.Use event handlers for mouse and keyboard users<\/em><br \/>\n<em> e.g. &lt;onclick=openWin(index.html) onkeypress=openWin(index.html)&gt;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">3.Ensure all forms on your website are keyboard accessible.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cognitive guidelines:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14485\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/human-brain-155189_960_720-265x200.png\" alt=\"human-brain-155189_960_720\" width=\"126\" height=\"95\"><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Have fewer distracting movements and flashy, blinking, flickering elements and animations.<\/li>\n<li>Build clear, well-structured navigation<\/li>\n<li>Have content with easy-to-understand language<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use ARIA:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ARIA or Accessible Rich Internet Applications is a collection of attributes used along with HTML specifically designed to help make the web more accessible to the differently-abled.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/html-aria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Click here for a list of ARIA tags to use in your code.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Web accessibility evaluation tools<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/ER\/tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Find out if your website meets accessibility guidelines<\/a> by using one of several tools compiled by the W3C.<\/p>\n<p>For good examples of accessible websites-take a look at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/feedmusic.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">feedmusic.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/usa.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">usa.gov<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bbc.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bbc.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/mozilla.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">mozilla.org<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What about mobile?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By now, you\u2019ve probably been wondering why we haven\u2019t discussed accessibility guidelines for mobile. We actually plan to dedicate our next blog solely to accessibility for mobile apps.<br \/>\nMost of the guidelines we\u2019ve mentioned above will apply to mobile websites as well. However, here are two key pain issues to keep in mind specifically for a mobile website:<br \/>\n1. Responsiveness:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Your website should be clearly visible and accessible on all screen sizes and modes. Users should also not have to scroll both vertically and horizontally.<\/p>\n<p>2. Input ease:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Whether differently-abled or not, it can be difficult for any user to input text onto a mobile screen. Having elements such as radio buttons, checkboxes etc. will aid those with both visual difficulties and those struggling to use the on-screen keyboard.<br \/>\nEnsure on-screen buttons are large and sufficiently spaced-out to avoid user input mistakes. For \u2018delete\u2019 buttons, consider giving users a \u2018confirmation prompt\u2019. Similarly, provide a visible and functioning \u2018back button\u2019 for your users to go back if a mistake has been made.<\/p>\n<p>We hope you found this blog valuable.
