The widely reported instances of breaches in WordPress websites have made people think twice about opting for it for their business. In all fairness though, users of WordPress have either been using outdated WordPress software, have poor system administration or just lack necessary tech and security knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve probably read a bunch of articles on how to secure your WordPress site with things like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Server hardening<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secure servers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DDoS protection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back ups<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular updates<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these are all absolutely important things to do, you could be missing something very basic &#8211; default settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me explain further.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a bunch of settings on your WordPress site that are so obvious (and very often overlooked) that they sometimes provide intruders with an easy loophole to \u201crecce\u201d your website as they are plotting a way to get in. Here\u2019s how you can secure your site by simply making these changes to your default settings:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Default #1 &#8211; Your WordPress Admin username<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to your username on WordPress, the default username is \u201cadmin\u201d. A lot of us don\u2019t pay attention to this small detail and allow this to be the default username for years together. This is an easy guess for a hacker. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, create a new, unique WordPress username for the administrator role and delete the existing \u201cadmin\u201d user. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve deleted the old user, WordPress will ask you what you want to do with the old content, for which you need to choose the \u2018Attribute all content to\u2019 option and select the user you just created.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15217\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/delete-admin-attribute-all-content-to.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1224\" height=\"565\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a video tutorial to help you change your WordPress username:<\/span><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GHQTf9r5KaE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Default #2 &#8211; Your admin URL<\/strong><\/span><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Many of our WordPress admin URLs still use <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/wp-admin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The problem with sticking to the default one is that hackers are all too familiar with it. It\u2019s just one step easier to hack your site. You want to be as discreet as possible about your WordPress site configuration. The reason being, if intruders see you\u2019re running on an outdated version, it\u2019s an open invitation to them. By default, the version you are using appears in the header of your source code. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-15221\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/wordpress-version-source-code-750x189.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"189\"><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wpbeginner.com\/wp-tutorials\/the-right-way-to-remove-wordpress-version-number\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WPBeginner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a little snippet of code you can use to remove this. All you need to do is add the following code to your WordPress theme\u2019s functions.php file:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">function wpversion_remove_version() {<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">return &#8221;;<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">}<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">add_filter(&#8216;the_generator&#8217;, &#8216;wpversion_remove_version&#8217;);<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a video tutorial:<\/span><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cIDZPshKAlk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Default #4 &#8211; WordPress version in readme.html file<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is another place where the WordPress version you use is displayed by default. It is located in the root of your installation, domain.com\/readme.html. You can delete this file via FTP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15223\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/wordpress-version-readme.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1346\" height=\"879\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Default #5 &#8211; Your WordPress database name<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: If your site is called \u2018best web designer\u2019, your database name by default will be wp_bestwebdesigner. You can harden your database security by simply changing the default database name to a unique one &#8211; one that\u2019s different from the name of your site and hard to guess.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changing your database name makes it harder for intruders to identify and access your database details. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/premium.wpmudev.org\/blog\/change-database-name\/?mkpp=b&amp;utm_expid=3606929-97.J2zL7V7mQbSNQDPrXwvBgQ.1&amp;utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fkinsta.com%2Fblog%2Fwordpress-security%2F\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WPMudev<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows you how to do this in 3 easy steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Default #6 &#8211; Database table prefix<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: By default, WordPress uses wp_ as the database table prefix. Changing it to something like 48ab_ is much more secure and harder to crack.
