While the answer was a resounding no, let\u2019s not discount the potential of a theme by itself. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WordPress themes have helped millions of businesses get online. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.codeinwp.com\/blog\/wordpress-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Code in WP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in 2014, the total number of theme downloads from WordPress.org was 123,498,018. That is a HUGE number!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does your theme impact your website\u2019s performance?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure, it does. Your theme is essentially like a house with great decor. It provides the styling and layout for your website. It matters because:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help conveys your identity through your website<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helps improve customer experience<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Makes you look professional<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gives your business a facelift<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes however, we unknowingly hamper the performance of our themes by simply \u2018hoarding\u2019. Just like we could be accumulating clutter in our houses that make it look messy, we could be doing the same with our website. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Weed out unused plugins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Plugins add to your code and make your site heavy. If there are plugins you haven\u2019t used in a while and are certain you won\u2019t use anytime soon, ensure you disable them through your WordPress control panel. Freeing up space will help your site load faster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Check for plugin conflicts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: All WordPress themes cannot be compatible with all plugins so it\u2019s not uncommon to have plugins that don\u2019t work. If you do face issues, disable one plugin at a time to determine the one that\u2019s causing the issue. While this can be time taking, start with the most recently installed plugins. If the problem still persists, contact the support center. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Weed out unnecessary assets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Just like plugins, it\u2019s important to weed out unnecessary analytics, fonts, widgets, advertisements, libraries etc. Advertisements, especially intrusive ads like pop-ups or those loaded from third party servers can negatively affect performance and slow down your site. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Consider removing social buttons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: I know the Facebook, Twitter, Google+ &amp; other social icons are really important but you\u2019ll be surprised to know that social icons add hundreds of kb of third-party JavaScript to your page. This not only poses a security risk but could have a negative impact on your site\u2019s performance. If you have multiple social plugins, consider keeping your top 3 most important ones to your brand and removing the others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Mind your images<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Formats like .svg, .png, .jpg are browser supported however formats like .webp have limited browser support. Your images might break or even skew your theme. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the format, the size of the images matter too. WordPress provides resizing options for images taken from phone or camera devices, too large to display on desktop. Image dimensions should also stay within the container dimension to avoid breaking code and to keep the site light. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Check if you\u2019re running on the latest WordPress version<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: You can check this through your WordPress Dashboard which alerts you if you need to upgrade. Outdated versions can cause your code to break or cause plugin conflicts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18399\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/wordpress-update.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"124\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Check the version of the theme<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Ensure you\u2019re running on the latest version of the theme. To check this, login to your WordPress Dashboard &amp; locate the version of the theme you are running on under \u2018Appearance\u2019 section. Like the WordPress update alerts, you will receive alerts for theme upgrades. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18397\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/themes.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1030\" height=\"223\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We hope we were able to give you some house keeping tips when it comes to your theme.
