(Source:<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pwc.com\/en_US\/us\/public-sector\/assets\/pwc-global-project-management-report-2012.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PricewaterhouseCoopers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For every $1 billion invested in the United States, $122 million was wasted due to lacking project performance. (Source: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.versionone.com\/assets\/img\/files\/CHAOSManifesto2013.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standish Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All this to say, planning is essential for any project, let alone a website. You may have a developer to create a website for you but think of your website as a project that you&#8217;re heading. In this article, we will attempt to make planning as easy as possible, helping you checklist all that you require. It\u2019s a good idea to go through each of the points mentioned below with a notepad so you can write down actionable items as well as points to go back to, to discuss with your designer &amp; developer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><b>. Set your targets and goals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Assess <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you want a website. Is it to sell products &amp; services? Is it to build awareness? Is it a social website? Is it to communicate or educate or motivate? Or is it to generate leads?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assessing the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helps you with the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What type of website should you look to build? Should it be a single page brochure website? Should it have a Facebook comments section? Should it have <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/pagination-vs-infinite-scroll-which-to-use\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pagination or infinite scroll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The objective of your website will help you decide &amp; chalk out how you want your website to look and more importantly, how you want it to function.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In your notepad, write down not more than 3 of the most important goals of your website that you can share with your designer &amp; developer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2. Define your target audience<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Once you\u2019ve got your goals down, it\u2019s time to define your target audience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write down the answers to these questions in your notepad:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who is going to use your website?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What will they do while on your website? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What time of the day will they visit?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will they find your website? (What search engine keywords are you going to use?)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What device will they use to access your website?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Answers to these questions will help you think deeper about your design, about colours, calls-to-action buttons, responsiveness, optimising for search engines etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3. Budget for your project<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It\u2019s always wise to set a budget no matter how large or small your project is. In your notepad, jot down all your possible expenses for the website. The could include spending for design tools, funds for web development, web <a href=\"https:\/\/india.resellerclub.com\/shared-hosting\">shared hosting<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/india.resellerclub.com\/domain-reseller\/domain-registration\">domain name registration<\/a>\u00a0etc. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In your notepad, jot down your expenses. Anything you might spend on &#8211; images, resources, tools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4. Set up your team<\/b>: A website requires experts in design, development and most importantly, a project manager. A team will help you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Free yourself of tasks as you oversee the project<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide expertise in specific areas (a developer would know what best plugin to use for a function, for example)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have your website up &amp; running\u00a0within a timeline<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will need a:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Web Designer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Web Developer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEO, SEM expert\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graphic Designer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content Writer<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure you communicate your goals with the parties so that they\u2019re on the same page. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Already have a team in mind? Put names against each role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5. Create a content strategy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Assess what content your website will contain. Content does not necessarily mean text. It could include videos, images, blogs, documents, slideshows etc. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content strategy is understanding how to present the content that you have on your website. Also, hire professional writers if need be and invest in stock images for your website sliders &amp; banners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>6. Discuss a wireframe with your designer &amp; developer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The last and final step in the planning process is to discuss &amp; create a wireframe with your designer. A wireframe is an outline or a draft of your website. A wireframe could include placeholder text, boxes to indicate banners, sliders &amp; navigation for the website &amp; footer. Your designer will give you a wireframe for your website. You will need to sign off on it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A wireframe helps visualise the final website as well as lets your team provide inputs for the next few steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve got the planning process down, it\u2019s half the battle won.
