The data sent over the communication channel that is established therefore is secure. HTTPS, therefore, is usually used on websites that deal with banking or e-commerce transactions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18823\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/With-and-without-SSL.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"92\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Move?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Apart from the three key layers of protection provided by HTTPS, there are several other reasons for you to migrate your website from HTTP to HTTPS. Thus, if there are is any eavesdropper present trying to listen or steal the information it is prevented.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data Integrity:<\/strong> Data passed over the channel can\u2019t be corrupted or modified without detection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Authentication:<\/strong> Users are able to communicate to their intended website without an attacker interrupting the conversation. Eg: Man-in-the-middle attack<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Better Performance<br \/><\/strong>With the upgradation of HTTP to HTTP\/2 (HTTP 2.0), most of the browsers support the new protocol over the secure HTTPS network. Moving to HTTPS increases the speed of your website and, in turn, boosts the performance of your website and user experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Steps to Migrate<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Getting a Valid SSL Certificate<\/strong><br \/>To begin with, you require an SSL certificate. <a href=\"http:\/\/manage.resellerclub.com\/kb\/answer\/2406\">SSL Certificate<\/a> is a digitally signed certificate that establishes the identity of a website and uses encryption to send data to the website. There are several types of SSL Certificates but the most recommended one is an EV SSL Certificate. Alternatively, you can even choose a COMODO SSL Certificate. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resellerclub.com\/ssl-certificates\">ResellerClub <\/a>provides four categories of SSL certificates:<br \/>1. POSITIVE<br \/>2. COMODO<br \/>3. WILDCARD and<br \/>4. EV SSL<\/li>\n<li><strong>Installing your SSL Certificate<\/strong><br \/><strong>I:<\/strong> One of the most important things to remember is that to install SSL Certificate you also need the SSL Certificate of the Certificate Authority (CA). The CA bundle contains root and intermediate certificates of the CA. You can download it from <a href=\"https:\/\/support.comodo.com\/index.php?\/comodo\/Knowledgebase\/Article\/View\/620\/1\/which-is-root-which-is-intermediate\">here<\/a>. Once your certificate is issued, it will be available in your control panel.\n<p>1. Login to your Control Panel<br \/>2. For installing your SSL certificate on your server, it depends mostly on the software that you are running. The steps change accordingly. Refer them to see the appropriate instructions.<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/manage.resellerclub.com\/kb\/servlet\/KBServlet\/faq1582.html#digicert\">Cpanel<\/a><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/manage.resellerclub.com\/kb\/answer\/973\">Plesk<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/support.comodo.com\/index.php?\/Default\/Knowledgebase\/Article\/View\/633\/37\/certificate-installation-microsoft-iis-5x--6x\">Microsoft IIS 5.x &amp; 6.x<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/support.comodo.com\/index.php?\/Default\/Knowledgebase\/Article\/View\/639\/37\/certificate-installation-microsoft-iis-7x\">Microsoft IIS 7.x<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/support.comodo.com\/index.php?\/Default\/Knowledgebase\/Article\/View\/637\/37\/certificate-installation-apache--mod_ssl\">Apache<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/support.comodo.com\/index.php?\/Default\/Knowledgebase\/Article\/View\/789\/37\/certificate-installation-nginx\">NGINX<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/support.comodo.com\/index.php?\/Default\/Knowledgebase\/Article\/View\/822\/37\/certificate-installation-os-x-lion-107-server\">OS X Lion (10.7) Server<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/support.comodo.com\/index.php?\/Default\/Knowledgebase\/List\/Index\/37\">Others<\/a><strong>II:<\/strong> If you want to host multiple SSL certificates for different domain on the same IP address, then you need to install them via SNI (Server Name Indication). Installing SSL via SNI doesn\u2019t require a dedicated IP address. Resellerclub supports SNI on their HostGator servers. To install it you need to contact the Support Team and they install it for you.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Update Hard-coded links to HTTPS<\/strong><br \/>It is a good practice to use relative URLs, but then are chances someone has hard-coded a URL and in such a case you will need to do a full cleaning of your website and the database during the migration process.\n<p>If you are a WordPress user, then you can easily follow Yoast\u2019s instructions that can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/yoast.com\/moving-your-website-to-https-ssl-tips-tricks\/\">here<\/a>. You will need to change the URL of the website, add some bits of code to force HTTPS in the admin area and even install the WordPress HTTPS plugin.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a non-CMS user then you will need to find all the links. This includes links to pages, images, CDN, JavaScript and, anything that your website might use. The next step is to change the relative link paths. For example, if the link is \u201chttp:\/\/yourdomain.social\/link\u201d then it should be \u201c\/link\u201d. Finally, refresh your cache on both website and browser and check the links.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Update Custom JavaScript, AJAX libraries to HTTPS<\/strong><br \/>If at all you\u2019ve installed any custom script on your website, you will want to change it to HTTPS as well. For example, if you\u2019re using Google\u2019s jQuery then you can point it to their HTTPS version <a href=\"https:\/\/ajax.googleapis.com\/ajax\/libs\/jquery\/2.1.3\/jquery.min.js\">https:\/\/ajax.googleapis.com\/ajax\/libs\/jquery\/2.1.3\/jquery.min.js<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Adding 301 Redirects<br \/><\/strong><a href=\"\/blog\/understanding-the-difference-between-permanent-html-redirects-and-other-redirects\/\">Adding 301 redirects<\/a> is an important step to all your new URLs. You can either use a <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/simple-301-redirects\/\">plugin <\/a>or add the following code to your htaccess file via FTP (Note this is for WordPress sites).<br \/><strong><br \/>Apache<\/strong><br \/>RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80<br \/>RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https:\/\/www.yoursite.com\/$1 [R=301,L]\n<p><strong>NGINX<\/strong><br \/>server {<br \/>listen 80;<br \/>server_name domain.com www.domain.com;<br \/>return 301 https:\/\/domain.com$request_uri;<br \/>}<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Update your robots.txt file and Sitemaps<\/strong><br \/>First, you update Sitemaps to use the HTTPS version of the URLS then, update the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/6062608?hl=en\">robots.txt<\/a> file to include the new <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/156184?hl=en\">Sitemap<\/a>. It is important to update robots.txt and Sitemap for SEO purposes, as it consists of website URLs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fetch<\/strong><br \/>As all the website URLs are changed after migrating to HTTPS, Google needs to <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/6065812?hl=en\">recrawl<\/a> this. Sometimes it may take weeks for Google to make these changes correctly, so it is recommended doing this as soon as you can to speed up the process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Updating your Google Analytics Profile URL<\/strong><br \/>Lastly, you need to update your Google Analytics Website\u2019s URL. To do this, click Admin under your account and then view settings. Then change the URL to the HTTPS version.
