Today I\u2019m excited to write about best practices for designing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dialogs <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to improve UX. Let me first spend a little time talking about what a dialog is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is a dialog?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dialog in design is a prompt or an overlay that requires the user to interact with it to make an action. An example of this is Microsoft Word\u2019s prompt when you attempt to close a document before saving it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22137\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Word.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1914\" height=\"1023\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dialog informs the user :<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That he \/ she needs to take an action<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of critical information <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That attention needs to be given to a specific task<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22139\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/attention.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"542\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take a look at some of the best practices for designing these dialogs:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limit the number of dialogs you build in: No one likes multiple interruptions. Interruptions force users to stop their current task and deal with the dialog. I suggest limiting the use of dialogs unless absolutely necessary like in the case of a \u2018Save\u2019 option in Word. It\u2019s also a good practice to show a dialog only when the user does something like click a button. Sometimes an unnecessary dialog could even put the user off, making him exit the webpage altogether. Like a mandatory \u2018Subscribe\u2019 dialog in a blog or a subscription to a newsletter.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22141\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/subscribe.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"836\" height=\"498\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2) Ensure the questions &amp; options are clear: A lot of time, dialogs have language that is not user-friendly. Dialogs should speak the language of the user. Instead of a \u2018WARNING\u2019, use a \u2018Delete your account?\u2019. The question should be clear with a line of explanation. One way of being clear is to let the user know the <\/span><b>impact <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of his decision. You can do this by providing additional information in the dialog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3) Use dialogs to indicate to the user his action has been processed: When an action is complete, let the user know through a dialog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22143\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/action.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4) Keep it short, silly: I cannot stress this enough &#8211; minimal is best. Especially with a subscribe dialog or if you want your user to fill out a form, &nbsp;less is more. Additional, unnecessary fields will only confuse the user. Take a look at this simple, 2-field form. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22145\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/pop-up-blog.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"376\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5) Avoid multiple forms within a single dialog: As I mentioned in my previous point, keep things simple. Multiple forms confuse the user especially if it\u2019s on a dialog. A better way is to create a new landing page for the forms. If you find yourself cramming too many elements in a dialog, it\u2019s probably best to create a new page. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22147\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/multiple.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"595\" height=\"312\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6) The background is important: Using a darkened, greyed out background does a few things:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It draws the user\u2019s attention to the dialog<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also lets the user know that can get back to the screen he\/she was on once the user engages with the dialog<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind the graying out cannot be too dark or too light. Too dark can hide the primary page and too light can miss the dialog box, thinking the primary page is still active.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22149\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/popup-modal-dialog-block.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1347\" height=\"664\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7) Make the \u2018Close\u2019 or the \u2018X\u2019 clearly visible: Let\u2019s admit, a dialog is intrusive to a user. While it may be to convey something important to the user, it could be frustrating too. It can be even more frustrating if the user wants to get rid of the dialog but is unable to locate the \u2018X\u2019 or the \u2018Close\u2019 with ease. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22151\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/close.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"736\" height=\"552\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, that\u2019s a wrap!
