The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) makes it easy for devices to join a network. It automatically gives each device an IP address, like a unique name tag, so that it can connect to the internet or other devices.

In Windows Server 2016, a DHCP server holds a pool of IP addresses and shares them with devices as needed. This saves time because you don’t have to set up each device. The server also provides extra details, like the default gateway and subnet mask, to help devices communicate. When a device starts, it asks the DHCP server for an address, and the server replies with one from its DHCP scope.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Process

Here’s how DHCP works in simple steps:

A device joins the network and asks for an IP address.

The DHCP server hears the request and picks an address from its pool.

The server sends the address to the device with a lease time.

The device takes the address and uses it to connect.

DHCP vs. Static IP

DHCP makes life easier by automatically giving out IP addresses, which are called dynamic IPs. But with a static vs dynamic IP, a static IP stays the same forever because you set it yourself.

DHCP is faster and reduces mistakes, while static IPs are good for devices that need a fixed address, like printers. DHCP uses a DHCP relay agent to work across different network areas, while static IPs require manual work for every change.

Types of Connection in DHCP

DHCP offers two main connection types: dynamic and reserved. Dynamic means the IP changes when the lease ends. But what is a DHCP reservation? It means the server saves a specific IP for one device, so it always gets the same one.

Reseller Club Hosting Services

Reseller Hosting Plans | Windows Reseller Hosting Plans | Cloud Hosting Plans | VPS Hosting Plans | Managed VPS Hosting | Dedicated Server Plans | Windows Dedicated Server Plans | Managed Dedicated Server Plans | Linux Shared Hosting Plans | Windows Shared Hosting

Are you wondering how DHCP works?
