Fix “Cannot Verify Server Identity” Error on iPhone for Business and Enterprise Email

When your iPhone shows a “Cannot Verify Server Identity” message while setting up or checking your Business or Enterprise Email account. This article explains how to resolve the error by trusting the SSL certificate or updating the incoming and outgoing mail server hostnames in the iOS Mail app.

If you see an error message in your Apple iPhone or iPad iOS Mail Application, that states “Cannot verify server identity”, this article will guide you on how to fix it.

Method 1:

1. Once you receive the notification message, click the Details option and you will be taken to the next page.

2. Click “Trust” in the upper right hand corner of your screen. Your connection is still secure, the SSL Certificate is simply expecting the server hostname rather than your yourdomain.tld

Please Note: The certificate is installed on the Partially Branded URLs of the server. However, you have setup email account using Fully Branded URL of the domain i.e. smtp.yourdomain.tld, imap.yourdomain.tld, pop.yourdomain.tld or mail.yourdomain.tld and hence, you receive a certificate warning message in the iOS device.

Method 2:

1. On your iPhone you will need to choose “Settings” and then select “Mail”, Click on “Accounts” and select the account in question which is experiencing the problem.

2. Select the account once more up top and then you should see the various settings you have for the account and in specific we will need to edit both the incoming and outgoing mail servers on this page. To begin making the edits select the “Host Name” field under “Incoming Mail Server” and erase mail.yourdomain.tld / yourdomain.tld and place the server hostname into this field. If you do not know your server hostname, our support team can provide that to you.

3. Once done editing the incoming mail server, lets click the Outgoing Mail Server and you’ll be taken to a page with your outgoing mail servers listed, we will need to edit the outgoing mail server associated with your email accounts.

4. Choose the “Host Name” field and erase mail.yourdomain.tld / yourdomain.tld and replace it with the server hostname as provided.
