Symlinks Security Rules in cPanel Linux Hosting (.htaccess, FollowSymlinks Disabled)

When symlink settings affect website access or server security in your cPanel Linux Hosting account, this article explains why the FollowSymlinks option is disabled in .htaccess due to security risks and how to use SymLinksIfOwnerMatch as a safer alternative to protect files and directories.

cPanel Linux Hosting packages do not support the FollowSymlinks option
in the .htaccess file. This option has been disabled, as it exposes a vulnerability that could allow a hacker to gain access to other cPanel Linux Hosting package's files and databases.

Instead, we recommend using the SymLinksIfOwnerMatch option in your cPanel Linux Hosting package's .htaccess file.
