A routing protocol helps routers figure out the best way to send data across a network. There are two main kinds: distance-vector and link-state. Distance-vector ones, like the Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), share basic route info with nearby routers.

Link-state ones give a fuller picture of the network. The EIGRP routing protocol is special because it combines the best parts of both, making it fast and simple to use in big networks.

Main Types of Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP)

The EIGRP protocol has different styles depending on how it is used. Here’s a look at the main ones:

Internal EIGRP

This one works inside a single network group. It has an administrative distance of 90, so routers trust it for local routes. They send each other hello texts to stay in touch and quickly change their paths.

External EIGRP

This type handles routes coming from outside the network group. Its administrative distance is 170, meaning it is less trusted than internal routes. Moreover, it is excellent for connecting with other networks.

Summary EIGRP

This summarizes many routes into one easy path. With an administrative distance of 5, it’s a quick pick for routers. It reduces unnecessary updates, hence maintaining smooth operation.

IPv4 EIGRP

This version, made for older IPv4 networks, picks paths based on speed and delay. It moves data fast and works well in many setups.

IPv6 EIGRP

This one’s for newer IPv6 networks. It keeps the same quick setup and fast changes, working with both old and new network styles. Every type of Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol uses a smart method called DUAL to find the shortest route, making it handy and reliable for all sorts of networks.
