The HTTP code 408 error indicates that there has been a communication and timing gap between the server and the client, leading to the Request Timeout status code. It signifies the condition where the server has timed out and is waiting for the client to send a complete request.

Oftentimes, this happens due to a slow or unstable internet connection, server failure, server overload or misconfiguration in client applications. However, the HTTP response code 408 Request Timeout can be fixed using simple methods.

How to Fix the HTTP Response Code 408?

    1. Check your internet connection and ensure that it is stable, fast and reliable. If not, restart the network connection or switch to a better network if at all necessary.
    2. There are instances when the server’s timeout is too rigid and can be optimised. Consider adjusting them to allow more time for the client to send the request.
    3. Sometimes, large requests take a long time to process and typically result in a 408 status code Request Timeout error. If necessary, you can compress data or split the request into smaller chunks.
    4. You can implement the retry mechanisms in the client application and resend the request, which will allow you to time the request well and complete it. Adding exponential backoff can also help reduce server load.
    5. In some cases, the server is overloaded. This may lead to HTTP 408 Request Timeout error. You can optimise the server resources or scale infrastructure.

How to Detect a 408 Response Code?

You can use browser developer tools like Chrome DevTools or Firefox Developer Tool. In the “Network” tab, look for a 408 status code response. Additionally, you can analyse server logs for entries marked with a 408 response code error to identify patterns or affected areas.
