    The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) helps send emails from one place to another. It starts when your email program connects to an SMTP server. This server talks to another server to deliver your message. 

    Then, it sends you the details of the email— who it is from, who it is for, and what it says. The other server answers with SMTP response codes, like 250, to say “all good.” In the case of SMTP protocol vulnerabilities, extra safety measures are taken. When finished, the connection stops with a simple “bye” command.

    Simple Mail Transfer Protocol: How Does SMTP Work? 

    1. Your email program contacts the SMTP server.
    2. It says “hi” with SMTP commands like HELO.
    3. The server says “okay” with an SMTP response code like 250.
    4. Your program sends the email details—who’s sending it, who’s getting it, and the message.
    5. The server might use an SMTP relay to pass it along, then say “done” with code 221.

    SMTP Vs IMAP and POP3

    SMTP sends emails using an SMTP server and SMTP relay. It gives orders with SMTP commands and gets answers with SMTP response codes. IMAP and POP3 grab emails instead. 

    IMAP keeps messages on the server so you can see them anywhere. POP3 pulls them to your device and deletes them from the server. 

    Further, SMTP can have risks, like weak SMTP relay authentication, but IMAP and POP3 just focus on picking up emails, not sending them.

    SMTP connects through four essential network pathways: Originating SMTP launches emails into the internet, Delivery SMTP authentication receives and distributes messages, Relay SMTP transfers communications between different email servers, and Gateway SMTP transforms and routes emails across complex network infrastructures, ensuring global communication efficiency.
